At Kettle Media Concepts, producers and content creators frequently ask us if they should shoot in 4K to finish in standard HD.

YES. We strongly recommend shooting in 4K, even if your final delivery will be in full HD. Think of 4K as twice the resolution of full HD. This means you can zoom in 50% without losing resolution. This is an excellent substitute for one-camera shoots. You can cover your jump cuts by switching between medium shots and close-ups. If you are only shooting with one camera, you should absolutely shoot in 4K. This will save you so much heartache and money later in post-production.
It should be noted that the camera angle is always the same on the zoom when you shoot in 4K. While this may seem obvious to a camera operator, clients often ask me if it can’t be used as a second angle. Mention this to your clients if they have a small budget and you are trying to convince them they can get by with just one camera. The bottom line is that shooting in 4K cannot be used as a substitute for multi-angle shooting, but it can be used for close-ups. Note that your zoom range is roughly 50%. You can push it to 60 percent, but beyond that, the image gets soft.
Most edit programs, including Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer, have easy-to-use built-in workflows for this. The process is straightforward. I will address the various workflows in an upcoming post.
