Is Artificial Intelligence Poised to Dominate the Video Production Industry?

I can say that while AI tools can certainly help with editing, coloring, audio mixing, voice-over, transcription, and subtitling, they’re not yet ready to replace human editors. However, please note that this is merely my professional opinion.

Let’s break it down:

AI and Editing: AI can assist with small tasks like cutting sequences and syncing audio and video, but a skilled editor is needed to create a compelling story.

AI and Coloring: Yes, AI can assist with small tasks, such as auto color correction; however, it is very limited. Auto correction adjusts the picture based on its interpretation, raising the brightness of whites and lights while lowering the darkness of blacks and shadows according to standard calibrations, but it lacks the human touch and misses the subtle nuances of the human eye that adjusts the scene to convey an intended mood or emotion. Several factors affect this process, including whether the picture was white-balanced or shot with a LUT, the time of day, and whether it was morning or night. While auto-correction can serve as a good starting point, it lacks the ability to fully achieve and convey your desired vision. A skilled colorist can enhance videos, making them stand out and emphasizing the elements that need more attention and finesse.

AI and Voice-Over: While there are many programs and software that can type text to voice, they are far less than ideal. My personal experience is that it’s too time-consuming to fix issues and mistakes AI makes. Again, AI isn’t quite there yet. There have been times when AI fails to determine where or how to emphasize certain words, understand the core message, and prioritize specific details. Emphasizing different words in the same sentence can completely change its meaning, and AI does not grasp this concept. Additionally, some programs lack features that help with emphasis. AI also lacks emotion and cannot discern when to use a happy, sad, or concerned tone. Perhaps one day, this will improve, but that day is not today.

AI and Transcription: AI can be a useful starting point in some cases, but if there’s even a slight distortion in the audio, the results may not meet your expectations. Additionally, AI often struggles to understand individuals with heavy accents, and current programs and software have not been sufficiently calibrated to accurately comprehend many words in different languages.

Rest assured, AI is not taking your job just yet. Until AI becomes more proficient, it is simply a tool that assists us. However, what the future holds is anyone's guess.
